In the fall of 1997 I met Jackie for the first time, she would later become the love of my life. One of the side benefits of meeting Jackie was getting to know and love her family. Her mom Mary Lou, who I came to love like a mom, was one of the sweetest women I have ever known. Even though, much to my disappointment, my relationship with Jackie only lasted three and a half years, my friendship with her family continued on. Mary Lou was faithful to send me birthday and Christmas cards every year. When we would talk on occasion we would always end the conversation with "I love you." In September of 2004 Mary Lou's health continued to deteriorate. In October it was discovered that she had cancer. I was able to go see Mary Lou several times in the last two months as she battled the cancer. Each time she seemed very happy to see me and each time we would end our visits with our customary "I love you's." Though May Lou was not able to listen to Midnight Country on a regular basis she did when she could. The last show before she passed away on November 19, 2004 I played several songs for her and told her I loved her. Her family who was with her that night said Mary Lou perked up and asked them to turn the radio up so she could hear the songs. The following week her brother Bobby, "The Clark Outlaw", came up to the show and we paid Tribute to his sister and my dear friend Mary Lou. Later that week I was honored to be a pallbearer as Mary Lou was laid to rest. Thanks for being such a good friend Mary Lou, I will always love you. |
