During the spring of 2003 a lady called Midnight Country for the first time to request I play "Nothing I Can Do About It Now" by Willie Nelson. After calling a couple more times she shared with me that she was undergoing treatments for cancer. After requesting what I would later learn to be her favorite song, I said "Hey what is your name? Let me send it out to you personally." She said her name was Eleanor. Over the next few months when Eleanor would call Midnight Country she would most often request her favorite song. She would let me know how she was doing in her battle with cancer. One of the last times she called she said they had told her there was nothing more they could do. It was then that it dawned on me the significance of Eleanor's favorite song. I was afraid I would never hear when Eleanor passed away, but on Friday after Thanksgiving in 2003 Eleanor's daughter Judy called the station and ask that they be sure and let me know. I was able to attend Eleanor's funeral and meet her family, including her daughters Judy, Cathy and her son Ron. I still miss hearing Eleanor's voice on the request lines. |
